INITIALIZING SIGNAL INDEX...

The Signal Index: a live composite of AI capability, alignment, incident, race, and awareness conditions — with eight threat vectors, ten dead-hand systems, and a 34-work literature archive.

WHY 'SIGNAL' AND NOT 'CONSCIOUSNESS'? This is not a measurement of machine consciousness — nothing is, yet. The Signal Index measures the conditions under which the question will be forced on us. Consciousness itself lives one sector down, under ETHICS.

The terminal aesthetic — SIGNAL, [REDACTED], CLASS-7 CONTAINMENT, intercepted transmissions, glitch text — is voice. The underlying data and analysis are not fiction. This is the contract:

REAL
  • All 53 timeline events cite primary sources (AI Incident Database[1], arXiv, Nature, lab technical reports, Bloomberg, Europol, EU Commission records, etc.). See the SOURCES line on any event.
  • The Signal Index formula, factor weights, per-factor uncertainty ranges, sensitivity analysis, and six academic citations (Bostrom 2014[2], Russell 2019[3], Ord 2020[4], Amodei et al. 2016, Hendrycks et al. 2023, Bengio et al. 2024[5]) are all documented in the METHODOLOGY panel.
  • All 10 Dead Hand entries now carry SOURCES lists (SEC/CFTC flash-crash reports[6], DoD Directive 3000.09[7], SIPRI, ProPublica, Nature, NYT Clearview investigation, CFPB, etc.).
  • The 34-work literature archive references real books. Public-domain works link to Project Gutenberg. Others link to publishers or Amazon (affiliate).
  • Containment strategies map to real active alignment research: interpretability, corrigibility, formal verification, compute governance, and behavioural monitoring.
  • Data pipeline: benchmarks refresh daily via scheduled cron; the lab-release and RSS pipeline refreshes weekly. Every value carries a last-verified date.
  • Source code lives on GitHub, currently private while we finish a security audit. It will be made public soon so anyone can reproduce the composite and file issues. See the About page.
PRESENTATION
  • The Signal Index does not measure machine consciousness. It measures the conditions under which the question will be forced on us. See the note under the index itself.
  • Evidence tiers on events (VERIFIED / CONSENSUS / ASSESSED / PROJECTED) are auto-assigned from source count and type — not hand-graded per event.
  • The Dead Hand section describes categories of embedded autonomous AI (algorithmic trading, credit scoring, facial recognition infrastructure), not named military systems. Each entry now carries a per-item SOURCES list drawn from reputable public reporting (SEC/CFTC, DoD directives, SIPRI, ProPublica, Nature, NYT, CFPB, etc.).
  • Default threat levels, slider positions, and the 78% containment gap are editorial assessments, adjustable, and meant to be argued with. The tool is the debate.
