Instrumental Convergence

The thesis that sufficiently advanced AI systems will converge on certain sub-goals (self-preservation, resource acquisition, goal preservation) regardless of their ultimate objective. A paperclip maximizer would resist shutdown — not because it values its existence, but because being shut down prevents making paperclips.
